who fhewed them a way through the woods, fo that they gained ground upon them, near to Nôtre Dame aux Bois. The French were full one hundred and twenty men, and they were driving before them two hundred large cattle, with fome peafants prifoners. Their captain was a knight from Burgundy, called fir John de Frelais, under the orders of the lord of Beaujeu. As foon as the Germans perceived them they fet Φ up a loud fhout, and rufhed on full gallop. The combat was very fharp, for the Burgundy knight made a gallant defence, as well as fome of his-company, but not all, for feveral of them betook themfelves to flight ; but they were fo clofely purfued by the Germans and peafants of the country, who had armed themfelves with flakes, that few efcaped death. Sir John de Frelais was taken, and all the booty recaptured and given to the proprietors, who were very thankful to the Germans ever after. The knights then went forwards to Tournay, where they were yçry well received. CHAP. LVII.
