The earl anfwered, that he would have ample amends, and the kingdom of France was fufficiently vextenfive, to make him full fatisfa&ion for all thefe ill deeds ; but, firft of all, he was anxious to go to* wards Thin PEvêque, to the relief of thofe good men, who had fo loyally and fo honourably defended it: he iffued therefore his commiffions, and fent letters of entreaty to his good friend Jacob vóa Artaveld, in Flanders, to the dukes of Gueldresand Juliers, and others in Germany, and went him* felf to Valenciennes with a large body of men at arms, knights, and efquires of his own country.
