It is ncccffary to make one general obfefraiioa on the fubjeft of thefe intervals, which I have juft been fpeakingof, and of which I hâve attempted to determine the length. When our Hiftorian finiihed one of the parts of the hiftory, he brought it down to the time of his writing ; and towards the end he related the events as they were palling : whence it happens, as it feems to me, that there is much confufion, and not unfrequently omiffions and miilakes, which he has been obliged tò çorreû, or alter, in the following parts. It is probably thefe different fupplements which have made him take in many places the title not only of " Aftor," that is to fay, Author, but in addition to it, that of Augmentator, of this hiftory; and made him fay, in other parts of it, " to have undertaken, continued, and augmented. VI. The Inquiries Froiffart made to compofe his Hifory, and the Pains he took on this Suijed. IT has been Ihewn with how much pain and fatigue Froiffart had vifited feveral of the courts in Europe. Admitted within the palaces of the great lords, he infinuated himfelf into their confidence to Rich a degree, that they not only related to him many particulars of their own lives, and of thofe events which they had a fhare in, or had been eyewitneffes of ; but they difcovered to him fometimes the fecret motives of the resolutions which had been entered into in the councils of the cabinet, upon the moft important affairs : and he never failed to take advantage of his converfations with thofe whofe intimacy he bpafted, and whom he could interrogate with greater freedom. •: P It
