was young, and had too much to do in various parts of his kingdom; for the free companies had quartered themfelves every where, and he could not get rid of them. Many of the great lords of France were hoftages in England ; during, which time their property ahd vaffals were'pillaged, and there was not aiîy Terfeédy for this mischief, as their men were too difpirited ev£n to defend themfelves. Louis Raimbaut and Limoufin, who had been brothers in arms, at length quarrelled, and I will tell you why'. Louis Raimbaut had at Brioude a very handfome woman for his miftrefs, of whom he was paffionately fond * and, when he made any excnrfions from Brioude to Ànce, he entrufted her to the care of Limoufin. Li-moufin was his brother in arms, and in him did he put his whole confidence ; but he took such good care of the fair lady that He obtained every favour from her, and Louis Raimbaut had in-formation of it. This enraged Louis Raimbaut againft his companion ; and, in order to infult him as much as poflible, he ordered him to be feized by his fervants and marched naked, all but his drawers, through the town, acid then flogged with rods: at every corner of à ftreet, trumpets founded before him, and his action was proclaimed: he was then, in this ftate, and with only a plain coat on, thruft out of the town, and banifhed as a traitor. Louis Raimbaut thus in-fill ted Limoufin j but he was fo much hurt at it, he vowed revenge whenever he fhould have an opportunity, which he afterwards found, d 3 * * € Limoufin, 2â§
