They placeda strong ambufcade, of two hundred fpears, in a wood near to the town. c We fet out at fun-fet from la Charité, and rode on bri&ly, in good order, until we came to Prully, where we had collected a number of boats, to pafs us and our horfes over the river. We croffed the Loire, as we had intended, and were all over about midnight : our horfes croffed, alfo, without accident ; but, as day» break was near, we ordered a hundred of our men to remain behind, to guard the horfes an4 boats ; and the reft advanced with a good pace, parting by the ambufcade, which took no notice of us. m When we had gone about a quarter of 3, league, they fallied forth upon ihofe at the river fide, whom they inftantly conquered, for all were flainor made prifoners 5 the horfes were captured, and the paffage of the river fecured, when, mount-ing our horfes, they ftuck fpurs into them, and arrived at the town as foon as we did.
