SIR JOHN FROISSART, IN HIS JOURNEY TOWARDS BEARN, IS ACCOMPANIED BY A KNIGHT ATT TACHED TO TH£ COUNT DE FOIX, WHO RET LATES TO HIM HOW THE GARRISON OF LOURDE; TOOK ORTINGAS AND LE PALLIER, ON THE RE; NEWAL OF THE WAR IN GUYENNE, AFTER THE RUPTURE OF THE PEACE OF BRETIGNY. AT the time I undertook my journey to vif$t the count de Foix, reflecting on the diver-fity of countries I had neyer feen, I fçt out from Carcaffone, leaving the road to Touloufe, on the right hand, and came to Monteroral, then to Tonges, then to Belle, then to the first town im the county of Foix5 from thence to Maifieres, to the castle of Sauredun, then to the handfome city of Pamiers** which belongs to the count de Foix, where I halted, to wait for company thaf were going to Beam, where the count refideJ. I remained in the city of Pamiers three days ; it is a very delightful place, feated among fine vineyards, and furrounded by a clear and broad river, called the Liege. Accidentally, a knight attached to the COUNT de Foix, called fir Efpaign du Lyon, came thither, on his return from Avig_ non r he was a prudent and valiant knight, * Pamiers,—three leagues from Foix, eighteen from Toulouse. handsome
