Some knights advanced from each army to ikirmifh -, and, as ufual in fuch cafes, fometimes one fide gained, and fomerimes the other. • The earl of Flanders, at this time, was very anxious for the honour and reputation of the duke of Burgundy, his fon-in-law ; he refided in a hand-ibme houfc which he had lately built near to Ghent*: he frequently heard from or fcnt to the duke, by mefièngers who were conftandy em-ployed on this fervice. The earl ftrongly ad-vifed his fon-in-law, for his own honour, not to exceed, on §ny account, the orders which he had received from his brother the king of France, or from his council.
